SFArtsED in-collaboration with 826 Valencia is thrilled to announce Redefining Place: a special presentation of works created in conversation between students at 826 Valencia writing workshops and 4th grade students at Commodore Sloat Elementary School working with SFArtsED Artist Mentor Jeanette Au. Over the course of 6 weeks, students at 826 and Commodore Sloat exchanged image and text-based works which contemplate what it means to find your place in the world. Each new exchange became a response to the last, as students worked collaboratively to create works which imagine multitudes of definitions of mapping space. Utilizing an innovative block-printing technique which uses lego blocks as elements of map-making, Commodore Sloat Students initiated the exchange of ideas by designing personalized maps of their surroundings. 826 Students responded by writing ideas prompted by creating their own fantasy worlds, and the exchange evolved!

Redefining Place will be on view in the SFArtsED gallery March 23rd –  April 12th with an opening reception welcoming artists and guests on March 23rd at 11am. Following this presentation, the work will be presented at 826 Valencia.
