Artist Mentors participate in SUPER FLEX: 4th Annual Contemporary Art Festival in Chinatown

SFArtsED Artist Mentors take on SF Chinatown’s 4th Annual Contemporary Art Festival, Saturday, September 13th. SUPER FLEX: Powered by Alter Egos and Shadow Selves takes over four streets in Chinatown—Grant Avenue, Waverly Place, Ross Alley, and Wentworth Place—to flex for freedom, justice and joy. Artist Mentors Rene Yung, Taraneh Hemami and Ramon Abad are participating this year, activating various locations through performance and installation.
As part of the Festival, Rene Yung‘s socially engaged Alter-liminal, Threading Alterity Civics Procession tackles the complex subject of immigration through storytelling, craft and performance. Turning multilingual pages of questions used for qualification for U.S. citizenship into twine, the artist exposes this standardized process into a charged ritual which is activated by performers and the general public. Ramon Abad brings his years of expertise as a puppeteer to Puppet Movie Studio, featuring a bigger-than-life puppet which sets as a backdrop or the festival, inviting visitors to activate it in the public space.  This year’s festival is curated Candace Huey & Guest Curators Taraneh Hemami and Theodore Lau.
