For this special Third Saturday in January we’re thrilled to welcome Tongva artist Katie Dorame who recently illustrated the children’s book Toypurina: Japchivit Leader, Medicine Woman, Tongva Rebel, written by Cheyenne M. Stone and Glenda Armand. Fed up with the oppression of Spanish colonization, the medicine woman Toypurina led a daring revolt against the San Gabriel Mission in California on October 25, 1785. This captivating book sheds light on the story of a remarkable yet often overlooked Indigenous leader, celebrating her bravery and resilience.
The event will feature Katie’s original illustrations, alongside a conversation with and reading from the book by the artist. You can learn more about Katie Dorame here. Books will be available to purchase and this event is FREE for all ages!
