Paper/Garment and Changing Forms Shine Light on Aspiring Artists

SAN FRANCISCO – In support of future visual artists, Minnesota Street Project will provide the space for SFArtsEd to showcase two student exhibits, Paper/Garment and Changing Forms at 2291 3rd Street. Guests also can view a few pieces from these exhibits at two neighborhood locations: MAC at 1003 Minnesota Street, and Industrious Life at 1095 Tennessee St.12 noon – 6 pm
Changing Forms is a collection of works created by students during SFArtsED’s summer program. Richard Olsen, artist instructor, led a class of students, age 10 to 13, to explore different art forms. He focused on diversity in art forms and hoped the art inspired dialogue among the students. Projects included painting on metal, self-portraits, photography, semiotics, dirt drawings and abstract art and more. Assignment-based projects intermixed with self-generated ones.
“Everyone brought their own voice to the changing forms,” Olsen said. “Everyone created, shared, learned from, and delighted in each other’s creations. Art was both a personal expression and a catalyst to new ideas, experience, and practice on the part of the class as a whole.”
Students felt challenged and inspired by the program to express their art in a new and profound way.
“What I like best about the class is that we’re not treated like little kids but as serious artists,” said Carla, age 13.
