Everyone who wants to stay after school, raise your hand!
When kids participate in their learning, they can’t get enough, and as of now we have two After School Programs in the City. Here, we tailor arts education to specific school populations and address its specific needs. Children eagerly attend five days a week.
At Glen Park Elementary School we focus on a combination of arts activities with literacy and health education. Artists-in-Residence who’ve taught during the school day carry on with dynamic curricula that also reinforce what kids are learning. We’ve been at Glen Park since 1985 and expanded to include the After School Program in 2002.
The newest Program is at Grattan Elementary School where the focus is on computers, chess, arts and recreation. Building interest, self-confidence and participation through arts education has been known to increase attendance all day.
Our arts-based after school programing began in 1988, and through 1992 we partnered with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks department to provide after-school Residencies. Then, in 1994, we joined the Richmond After School Collaborative and for 7 years, were one of the arts educators in a consortium of health and education organizations.
It’s all about engaging, energizing and involving children in art — art that allows learning to sink in with added intensity and imagination.
